Level 4 NYC: Six Word Stories & Six Word Memoirs

This project was inspired by Smith Magazine's Six-Word Memoirs.  Smith Magazine is an online publication where anyone can publish writing.  There are many fantastic examples on the site.  

Telling a story in only six words is very challenging.  Every word must be carefully chosen for maximum impact.  In our Level 4 Class in NYC, be began by discussing the difference between a memoir and a story. We developed some definitions from our class discussion.

What is the difference between a memoir and a story?

Memoir: the real experiences of a personal, similar to an auto-biography.
Story: fiction, can be realistic, but not entirely true, imaginary
Snow White, Robin Hood, The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars
We will be reading memoirs and stories by students and writers of all ages, from children to adults. After we read these stories, we will begin brainstorming, or generating many ideas, to write our own Six Word Memoirs and Six Word Stories.


After writing our stories and memoirs, students created images to enhance their stories. Here are some of the fantastic results:
