1) Urban Farming and Gardening
A farm in East New York, Brooklyn. East New York is a neighborhood in Brooklyn where many students from our class live. This photo shows a farm produced by East New York Farms! Photo copyright: Rob Stephenson, FiveBouroughFarm.org. |
I've been researching urban farming and gardening. When I walk in neighborhoods of Brooklyn and Queens, I often frequently see community gardens like the like above. Many students in NYC had large gardens before they moved. They grew bananas, coffee, cocoa, lemons, and many other fruits and vegetables. It may seem crazy that a big city like NYC could have farms, but there are many organizations that make it possible to farm in NYC. If you're interested in learning more about how you can participate in a garden near you, click on one of the links below.

2) Apartment Gardening
Maybe you're not ready to become an urban farmer. There are plenty of ways you can grow vegetables and herbs from the windows of your apartment. When you use recycled materials, it can be very cheap too. Look at some of these brilliant ideas. You can find the sources for these ideas at the bottom of the post. You can also find more links with more ideas.

3) Our Classroom Garden Project
(the beginning)
In class, we talked about the foods that students grew before they moved to NYC. We also practiced reading and writing directions. Then we had fun planting the seeds. We planted vegetables and herbs that people can grow in their apartments: lettuce, basil, peppers, tomatoes, and arugula.
We are going to document the progress of the plants here. Are you as excited as I am to watch them grow?
